Kopitiam tells the story of love and separation, remembering the past, and moving forward. Set in a small coffee shop run by an elderly couple, Kopitiam is a puppet theater show that questions what it means to lose a part of us and face changes.

The production is a love letter to everyone familiar with the kopitiam – a heritage icon we love, cherish, but sometimes take for granted in a thriving society

Notes:

Kopitiam means coffee shop in Hokkien, a Chinese dialect. This term is commonly used in Singapore and Malaysia and usually refers to a small shop that mainly serves coffee, tea, and various types of toast typical in these two countries.

Kopitiam was developed under the Gateway Arts Collective-in-Residence Program 2020/2021 and was staged as part of the Flipside Esplanade event in 2022

Profile Artist

The Five Stones Theater is an international collective dedicated to creating artistic experiences for children and young people. Inspired by and named after a traditional children's game popular in Singapore, we strive to spark audience curiosity and imagination through the power of play. Connecting artists and audiences with refreshing, thought-provoking, and 'slightly different' works, we invite children from all cultures to a conversation about art and the world we live in.
